...it. Here too the Court Leet of Argentines Manor was held. The pillory and

were somewhere in the neighbourhood, probably on the green. The village green suggests to us the springtime merrymaking during the middle ages, when the maypole was set up, and everyone hailed the earning warmth and light of summer with tumultuous joy. We may sometimes think the winter dark, dreary and wretched enough in our time, but it was very much worse 600 years...

Also Mr Jebb and family, they used to fall out with Mr Harvey the Vicar. Mr Jebb dug up the piece of land leading to the church – and found some human bones. The vicar and he had an argument about that. App...

Population at this time was around the 600-700 mark; today it is between 1200-1300 and the village is built up almost beyond recognition. It is learned, however, that no further large development is envisaged for at least t...

Flambards Manor: History and Ownership
Flambards Manor acquired its name in the late fourteenth century after ownership of the manor passed to Elizabeth, wife of Edmund Flambard. However, its origins lie several centuries earlier. It is one of several manors in Meldreth that are recorded in the Domesday Book. The manor had belonged to Ely Abbey and passed to Hugh de Scalers after the Conquest. According to W M Palmer, ownership of the manor, which was spread over several parishes, had...

The main early form of hard labour was picking oakum – pulling apart old, tarry strands of rope – but this activity was difficult to exercise discipline over and it was criticised for doing little to deter. The treadmil...
