From the Papers ...

25th December 1942
A very enjoyable and happy afternoon was spent by parents, managers and friends at the Junior School on Friday, December 18th, when they were invited to a Christmas Entertainment given by the children.  The programme started with a recitation and song by the infants, then followed a very clever “puppet” Aladdin play by the Junior Boys.  Miss R Pearce (teacher) is to be congratulated on the excellence of this performance, being a “past master” in the handling of puppets.  A very realistic Nativity play was the last item on the programme, very marked was the reverence shown in the play by these small children, their individual parts were most real to them.  Several carols were also sung which perhaps explains the nice performance of the many bands of Christmas singers during the past week.

Miss G Butler thanked the mothers for their cooperation during the year, saying that every scholar had been immunised from diphtheria, milk was regularly taken, all the children belonged to the School Savings Group, and 80 per cent of them had dental treatment.  Miss Butler went on to thank Mr Gordon Handscombe for so ably arranging the lighting of the stage and scenes for the play, also the very pretty Christmas tree illumination.  Before leaving, the Misses Hammond and Palmer presented each child with a book and a 2s 6d National Savings Stamp.  The gifts were the result of the generosity of friends when the recent whist drive took place.  It is hoped to hold the annual school party early in the New Year.
