Test Pit Exhibition - 24 November 2013

On Sunday 24th November, Meldreth Local History Group held an exhibition in Meldreth Village Hall to mark the end of our Heritage Lottery Funded archaeological test pitting project. The exhibition was attended by hundreds of people, keen to know more about the finds from the 32 pits.

At the exhibition, the finds from each pit were displayed in grids, together with a timeline of the pottery found in each pit. Posters gave details of the known history of each test pit site as well as showing photographs of the dig and finds. Other displays gave additional information on different aspects of the village’s history and on some of the finds. Two films of the project, one produced by History Group member Tim Gane, and the other by students at Melbourn Village College, were shown throughout the day.

Dr Carenza Lewis, who had worked closely with us throughout the project, gave a talk in which she explained the significance of the finds and put them into context. Dr Lewis said, “I think it is the most fantastic exhibition.  It really conveys, in a way that I think better than any other exhibition of finds I’ve seen from test pitting, what it is all about and how it works.”
