Introduction

Benjamin Payne, son of William Payne and Sarah Waller, was born in 1792 in Meldreth, Cambridgeshire. He was baptised on the 4th of November 1792 at Holy Trinity Church. He married Sarah Balk from Bassingbourn on the 3rd of December 1818 in St Peter & Paul Church, Bassingbourn and they had six children.

He was the first recorded publican of the Dumb Flea in Chiswick End.

Benjamin died on the 18th of July 1877 and was buried on the 21st of July 1877 in Holy Trinity churchyard. His wife Sarah died on the 3rd of September 1880 and was also buried at the Holy Trinity Church on the 7th of September 1880.

Second Generation

2. William Payne, son of Benjamin PAYNE and Sarah BALK, was born in 1819 in Meldreth. He died on 1 January 1824 and was buried on 4 January 1824 in Holy Trinity churchyard.

3. James Payne , son of Benjamin PAYNE and Sarah BALK, was born in 1821 in Meldreth.  He married Sarah Stittle on 22 June 1858 in All Saints Church, Harston. He died on 25 July 1894 at Chiswick End and was buried on 28 July 1894 in Holy Trinity churchyard.

Sarah Stittle was born on 23 October 1827 in Melbourn. She was christened on 7 September 1828 in All Saints Church, Melbourn. She died on 3 June 1891 at Chiswick End and was buried on 6 June 1891 in Holy Trinity Church.

She and James PAYNE had the following children:

4. Emma Payne, daughter of Benjamin Payne and Sarah Balk, was born in 1823 in Meldreth. She married John Sutton on 25 December 1850 in Holy Trinity Church. She had no children and died on 8 November 1882 in Bassingbourn. She was buried on 13 November 1882 in Bassingbourn Parish Cemetery.

John Sutton was born in 1821 in Bassingbourn.  He was christened on 8 July 1821 in St Peter and Paul Church, Bassingbourn. He died on 30 October 1896 in Bassingbourn and was buried on 5 November 1896 in Bassingbourn Parish Cemetery.

5. Eliza Payne, daughter of Benjamin PAYNE and Sarah BALK, was born in 1826 in Meldreth.  She married John Course on 1 August 1847 in The Holy Trinity Church.  She died on 12 July 1899 in Melbourn and was buried on 15 July 1899 in Holy Trinity churchyard.

John COURSE was born in 1825 in Barley, Hertfordshire, England.  He was christened on 3 April 1825 in St Margaret Church, Barley. He died on 5 June 1869 in Meldreth and was buried on 8 June 1869 in Holy Trinity churchyard.

6. William Payne, son of Benjamin Payne and Sarah Balk, was born in 1828 in Meldreth.  He never married and died on 15 January 1900 in Meldreth at Chiswick End where he lived with his brother John. He was buried on 18 January 1900 in Holy Trinity churchyard.

7.  John Payne , son of Benjamin Payne and Sarah Balk, was born in 1831 in Meldreth.  He never married and died on 10 January 1910 at Chiswick End (The Dumb Flea PH) in Meldreth. He was buried on 13 January 1910 in St Mary’s  Church, Whaddon, Cambridgeshire.

8.   William Payne , son of James Payne and Sarah Stittle, was born in 1858 in Meldreth, Cambridgeshire, England.  He was christened on 7 November 1858 in Holy Trinity Church, Meldreth.  He died in 1940 at Meldreth.

9.  Elizabeth Ann Payne , daughter of James PAYNE and Sarah Stittle, was born in 1860 in Meldreth. She was christened on 6 July 1862 in All Saints Church, Harston, She never married and died on 20 October 1889 in Meldreth. She was buried on 23 October 1889 in Holy Trinity churchyard.

10. Frederick Payne , son of James PAYNE and Sarah Stittle, was born in 1863 in Meldreth. He was christened on 3 July 1864 in All Saints Church Harston. He married Emily Gadd on 29 November 1890 in Cambridge.  He died in 1945 at Meldreth.

Emily Gadd was born in 1862 in Orwell, Cambridgeshire, England. She was christened on 3 August 1862 in St Andrew’s Church, Wimpole, Cambridgeshire.  She died in 1933 in Meldreth.

11.  Edwin James Payne , son of James Payne and Sarah Stittle, was born in 1867 in Meldreth. He was christened on 9 June 1867 in All Saints Church Harston.  He died on 16 October 1869 in Meldreth and was buried on 20 October 1869 in Holy Trinity churchyard.

12.      Elizabeth Ann Payne  Daughter of Frederick PAYNE and Emily GADD was born on 26 February 1893 in Meldreth. She was christened on 28 May 1893 in Holy Trinity Church. She never married and died in 1978 at Meldreth.

13.      Edwin Stittle Payne Son of Frederick Payne and Emily Gadd was born on 1 March 1896 in Meldreth. He was christened on 26 April 1896 in Holy Trinity Church. He never married and died in 1978 at Meldreth.

14.      Phillis Emily Payne Daughter of Frederick PAYNE and Emily GADD was born on 23 November 1898 in Meldreth. She was christened on 8 March 1899 in Holy Trinity Church. She married Frederick Matthews on 17 August 1925 in Holy Trinity Church and died in 1985 at Ely, Cambridgeshire.
