Tea to mark the opening of the school

Meldreth School opened on Monday 4th April 1910.  Fifty-five children were admitted on the first day, fifty-three of whom had previously attended school in Melbourn.

The school catered for children from the ages of 3 to 14 although Frederick Aldridge, the Headteacher’s son who was enrolled at the school on 5th April 1910 was still only two years old when he started.

Below are the first two pages from the school’s admissions register and show all of the children who were admitted on the first day.  Mr Aldridge, the Headmaster, made sure that his daughter Gladys was the first child to be enrolled!

The entry in the school log book for 4th April 1910, written by Mr Aldridge, the headmaster is also shown below.

On Friday 24th June, a special tea was held at the school.  A report appeared in the Royston Crow on 8th July 1910 and can be seen below.
