By Chris Duguid

John Ransome was born in Stowmarket, Suffolk in 1860. Susannah Smith was born in Norfolk in 1861.

In the census of 1880 John and Susannah were living with her family in the Gardeners’ Cottage at Manor Farm, Papworth Everard.

They had a son Frederick age 6 months who died as a baby.

His father in law, Thomas Smith, was working as a Gardener and John was employed as a Groom.

John and Susannah Ransome then moved to Longstowe, where John worked as a Coachman and Groom. They had two daughters, Agnes born in 1883 and Alice born in 1885.

By the 1901 census they were living at the Court Stables, Meldreth. John Ransome was working as a Coachman for the Mortlock family at  Meldreth Court. Agnes was 18 and working as a housemaid in Buntingford. She married Herbert Gipson in 1908.

John Ransome retired in 1910 and was presented with a condiment set . He died in 1916 and is buried in Melbourn cemetery.

Susannah Ransome continued working for the Mortlock family. She was known as "Granny Ransome" and was well known in the village. She died in the Court Stables Cottage  in the late 1930's.
