Guidelines for Family Historians

This website was set up to record and preserve the history of Meldreth; a history which is inextricably linked to the people who have lived and worked here.

Since we launched our first website in March 2011, we have had a growing number of enquiries from family historians.  We have been able to share research and information and our website is richer for this collaboration.

If you have traced your family to the village, then please follow these simple steps to get the most from this site.

Take the First Time Visitor’s Tour

If you are a first-time visitor to the site, please follow our First Time Visitor’s Tour which will give you a flavour of the different types of material that we have on our website.

Use the Search Facility

There is a search bar on every page of the website.  Put the surname of the family you are interested in into the search bar and press enter.  Please remember that spellings may have changed.  If there are matches, a list will be displayed.  Work your way through this list to see what we have on the family you are researching.

If there are no results, why not add a page on your Meldreth ancestors to our website?

For more general enquiries, try searching for a particular date.  This will allow you to see what we have dating from around the same time and will give you an idea of what it has been like to live in Meldreth over the years.

Other Resources

We also have resources and information that are not on the website, including burial records and the admissions registers, list of WW2 evacuees and log books from Meldreth Primary School.  Please contact us if you would like to ask us to look up information on your behalf.

The Meldreth parish registers (1599-1950) may be purchased on CD from Cambridgeshire Family History Society and the records are also available on the subscription site, FindMyPast.

A number of marriage licences survive among the parish records deposited at Cambridgeshire Archives. These have been transcribed and indexed by R. and B.E. Snudden and are available as a pdf file.

If searching for ancestors, try this website which will construct a Google search for you and produces excellent results.

Next Steps

We welcome contributions to our website – either as comments or new pages.  If you would like to share the results of your family history research with a wider audience, then please consider uploading a page to the website.  There are instructions on the site, but please email us if you need any help with this.

Finally, we will do our best to help with any enquiries you have, but please remember that we are volunteers and our time is limited.  Meldreth Local History Group is a community group that relies on donations and sales of merchandise to continue its work.  If you would like us to carry out research on your behalf, this may be possible but we would welcome a donation to Group funds.
