An Afternoon of Activities in Melwood, June 2003

On Saturday 15th June 2003, between 2pm and 7pm an afternoon of children’s activities and musical entertainment was organised by the Meldreth Village Association and Meldreth Parish Council.

Between 2pm and 4pm there were several woodland activities such as a ‘Make a Scarecrow’ competition and building model boats to sail on the River Mel. The Meldreth Art Group organised art activities and there were various nature activities, such as discovering mini beasts, mask making from woodland materials and making a summer lantern.

From 4pm until 7pm there was live music provided by the duo ‘Cafe Mondiale’ in the meadow in the centre of Melwood. With the children’s activities over, everyone was invited to bring along a picnic and sit in the sunshine to enjoy the cafe style music.

In the August 2003 edition of the Meldreth Matters, Margaret Hunter wrote:

The event was greatly enjoyed by at least twenty family groups. They were spread out over the meadow with some children constructing small boats to take part in the race down the river. Others made their scarecrows for the competition or hunted “beasties” in the wood and designed head-dresses.

It was a very happy afternoon and a very special thanks should go to Clare McPhee and Joan and Tim Gane for all their hard work in organising everything and all other members of the Village Association who gave invaluable help throughout the day.
