Holy Trinity Churchyard: the Headstones

Introduction

Below is a photographic gallery of the tombstones in the churchyard. Most of the photographs were taken by Malcolm Woods in July 2014, with additional photographs by Kathryn Betts in June 2015.

For further information, please see our page on the Monumental Inscriptions, which includes information on the burial records, maps of the churchyard and transcriptions of the monumental inscriptions.

We would like to thank Malcolm Woods for photographing the gravestones in 2014.

  • William Holder is my 5th Great Grandfather. His daughter Susanna Holder is my 4th Great Grandmother.

I’m so excited to have found William’s grave monument. It has been a great difficult journey to be able to find any information on this family. Susanna married William Hollows Blackman against her father’s request. As a result after a few years William requested Susanna and William Blackman to leave England and never return should he pay them a substantial amount of money. William and Susanna accepted the offer and left for Iowa, USA.

Would love more information on my ancestors if any is available.

  • In reply to Lisa Fox, Benjamin Hale was buried in Holy Trinity churchyard on 3rd February 1897, but we have been unable to identify his gravestone. George and Charlotte died in 1919, after Holy Trinity churchyard had been closed (and before the new burial ground in Fenny Lane opened).  They are both buried in the neighbouring village of Melbourn.  Oakville Lodge does not still exist, but the house that was once the blacksmith’s does.

  • As one of Sarah Hale‘s great-great grandchildren I was interested to see the photo of her gravestone. I am hoping to visit Meldreth for the first time later in the year and I was wondering if there are any other Hale family graves in Meldreth. Is there any trace of Sarah’s husband Benjamin’s grave? Is George and Charlotte Hale’s grave still marked? Also does Oakville Lodge and the house that was the blacksmith’s still exist? Any help would be much appreciated.
