A History of Meldreth School, 1960 - 1969

The school saw substantial changes in the 1960s including

  • Extensions to the school building
  • The construction of the school swimming pool
  • A new playing field
  • The formation of the PTA
  • The start of the school meals service from the school's new kitchen.  On 8th December 1966, when the service started, 84 dinners were served.

Throughout the decade, the staff and pupils struggled with poor conditions.  At times, the school had no water and temperatures in the classrooms were as low as 32°F or 0°C.  In January 1964 the boiler overflowed an flooded the infants classroom and the chimney in the same room caught fire.
